Peer pressure is crazy hard not to fall into. In my fifty years of farming on the farm where my husband grew up, I have admired his tenacity to be an organic farmer when he knew that we were being made fun of. The fact that he went against the grain and we farmed the land the best we could without chemicals has made me realize how strong his commitment is to do no harm to the land we have been caring for. Thank you for your honesty.

Glad you took time to write this. And sowing too early is rarely wise. I'm rooting for you!

This was really good, and I can personally attest to how difficult it can be to have patience in the spring. And it also reminded me of strange story out of the Soviet Union - Lysenkoism. Trofim Lysenko rose to prominence in Stalin's USSR by rejecting genetics as fascist science and adopting the idea that a plant or animal can inherit acquired characteristics, i.e. a wheat seed planted in cold, damp mud of early spring 'learns' how to survive and passes this new characteristic onto the next generation! You can read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysenkoism. Lysenko is responsible for killing more people by malnutrition than anyone in history outside of his biggest fan Stalin.

You’re a damn fine writer. I appreciate the fact that you tell it like it is.

Adam what would happen to commodity prices if we as a nation would establish a 7 year reserve of grains like we had when I was kid. Would it help even out prices and give the nation a strategic reserve similar to a strategic oil reserve. We all want our nation to prosper and especially our farmers but running a business hand mouth isn’t working, I am represented by Victoria Spartz, a farmer from Indiana. I would your opinion and those of the farmers around you before I speak to her about.

Keep pushing the limits and keep your chin.🙏you and all the farmers.

Thank you for your honesty. I’m no farmer, I’m a city girl. But I know patience, or at least I’d like to. I do know panic, that tight scared feeling. I prefer that solid clunk in my gut that says I’m honoring my own experience. So I’m with you, sending support and trust.

Thanks for writing this. The metaphor of kicking the rock back is amazing.

It's hard not to second-guess farming decisions.

But some words of wisdom from my former-farmer partner: " We never tried to be the first one out there, didn't try to kill ourselves over it. And what I saw over the years? Our yields were about the same as everyone else's. Our harvest came in the same time as everyone else's."

It's not that there weren't plenty of weeks where I saw him maybe a grand total of 2-3 hours. Not that he didn't nearly work himself to death. Just that he is wise enough to not try to compete with Mother Nature. Maybe we need to work with her a little more, eh?

We follow crocus, then daffodils in our garden, not the neighbors. Stick with the tree line, it isn’t caught up in stories in its mind which make it feel some kind of way.
