Dude, you can write. Should you cease wanting to be a starving farmer, you’ve got a future as a starving writer. Great read

Outstanding writing as always. I was flashing back to my childhood and watching “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.”

I love the image of midwestern farmers showing up in a swanky corner of Utah. Thanks for sharing the tea. 😃

Loved this. Makes me appreciate farmers even more. We’re all filled with so much anxiety these days. Finding more productive ways (instead of, say, self-loathing, hate, and blaming others) to cope is the way out.

Utah was a mystery to us as well. Their liquor laws are the stuff of legend.

Pretty sure this is spot-on accurate “The whole state feels like it was designed by a drunk lawyer and a sober Puritan in a hostage negotiation.” Except it was likely a sober Mormon. I’m glad you were born and are out there connecting with people and telling the stories. We need our farmers to be healthy and sane-ish —

Fantastic essay! Loved every word of it. I know your emphasis is on the male farmer but we female farmers have the same anxieties - we can relate.

Oh my, your description of the farmer’s nervous system is spot on. I read it to my wife and she just said, “yup.” I now see the 4 o’clock wake up must be universal. I’ve started to wonder what it might take to start building fence at that hour. Thanks for the thoughts you share. Time for bed, 4 o’clock comes early…
